Major League Hacking 2021 Hackathon Season

CUNY Hackathon 2021 is the first virtually held hackathon for the City University of New York students, but we still welcome students from all over the world. With the goal of bringing together students in software development, design, marketing and entrepreneurship to build solutions for problems unique to the New York City community, this 24-hour event will see students create projects and learn from workshops and activities.

Have questions? Check out our FAQ below.

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in technology attends a hackathon to learn, build & share their creations over the course of a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. You don’t have to be a programmer and you certainly don’t have to be majoring in Computer Science.

How will CUNY Hackathon be run during the pandemic?

CUNY Hackathon 2021 is going to be completely virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are doing our best to provide the same experience as an in-person event with one added perk: hacking from home this year!

How can I prepare for the hackathon?

Our hackathon is very beginner friendly! We have intro workshops tailored to first-time hackers and mentors to support you throughout the event! Be sure to join the discord server to get the latest updates and to communicate with your peers and the organizers.

Do I need to be good at coding?

No, you don’t need ANY coding experience to participate! If you do, that’s great! If you don’t, that’s also great! Students of all skill levels are encouraged to attend, even if you’ve never written a line of code. We’re very beginner friendly and are prepared to teach you everything you need to learn right here.

How do I find a team to join?

You can work on a project on your own, or you can work with a team of at most 4 students. Teams can be formed prior to the day of the hackathon with other participants, or at the team formation event before official hacking begins. Please attend the Team Formation event on Saturday and post a intro or respond to someone else’s intro in the #team-formation channel on Discord.

What should I make?

You can create any project, as long as you haven’t started it before the hackathon begins. If you need any ideas, we have tracks that you can follow: (1) Data Science, (2) Game Development, (3) Mobile Development, (4) the Environment, and (5) Health Tech. We also have sponsored tracks: Best Use of Qoom, and Best Use of IEX Cloud.

Who can attend CUNY Hackathon 2021?

Any current matriculated (this means degree earning) student is welcome to join, regardless of skill level or declared major. We encourage you to invite all your friends as we welcome beginners. Teams won’t just need programmers they’ll need designers, product managers, entrepreneurs, and more.

How much does it cost to attend?

CUNY Hackathon is FREE for all participants, thanks to our amazing sponsors! Participation includes a lot of free gear and swag!

Will there still be sponsors for us to talk to?

Yes! We will be organizing numerous networking sessions for you to talk to sponsors during the hackathon weekend.

Will there still be swag?

Yes! We have a strong team researching the best swag given our virtual event. In order to get swag, you must submit a project at the end of the event.

Will it still be awesome and interactive?

Yes absolutely! There will be hangouts, open session hacker chats, and networking sessions to talk to one another as well as interactive workshops hosted by our awesome sponsors.

How will mentoring work?

Mentoring will all be done through Discord which will allow you to message a specific mentor or send a general message. You can use the #ask-a-mentor channel or any other channel in the support category.

What software will I need?

We will have our main communication over Discord and Hopin. We recommend a place with stable internet connection so that you can attend all workshops and communicate effectively with your team. We are working on solutions for those who do not have access to a place with a stable internet connection.

Where do I submit my project?

You can submit your solution/project on Devpost. We will have a submissions workshop to help those unfamiliar with Devpost.

Where do I go to attend a session?

All workshops, events, and networking with both your peers and the company recruiters will take place on Hopin. We will be sending out a resource to help you get acquainted with the platform if you have not used it before.

What are the rules?

Major League Hacking has a Code of Conduct that all participants must abide by before, during, and after the event. TL;DR. Be respectful. Harassment and abuse are never tolerated. If you are in a situation that makes you uncomfortable at an MLH Member Event, if the event itself is creating an unsafe or inappropriate environment, or if interacting with a MLH representative or event organizer makes you uncomfortable, please report it using the procedures included in this document.
